Safety Tips for Transporting Your Pet

  • Pets who are severely ill or injured may try to bite, scratch, or act defensively toward those trying to help them. Approach any injured or sick pet slowly and calmly. Say your pet’s name softly and observe their reaction. Call for assistance if your pet responds aggressively.
  • For large dogs who cannot move, create a makeshift stretcher using a blanket or tarp, making sure to support their neck and spine.
  • For cats, gently place a blanket or towel over their head to prevent biting, then carefully lift them into an open-topped carrier or sturdy box.
  • If possible, elevate and apply gentle pressure to any bleeding wounds.

Toxin Exposure Emergency

If you think your pet has eaten or been exposed to something toxic, call our NDS team immediately. During and outside of our regular hours, contact the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center’s 24-hour hotline at 888-426-4435. Their trained toxicologists will assess your pet’s age, health, and what was ingested, then recommend the best course of action.

We’re here to support you and your pet in good times and bad—you’re never alone when you’re part of the NDS family!
